Music Monday:REM’s You Are the Everything

2 Aug

There are certain songs that just stop you in your tracks, you know? It doesn’t matter how many times you hear them, each time makes you pause in awe. I’m not talking about favorite songs; that’s something completely different. I’m talking about songs that make you ache, make you wish that you were in them looking out.

I first heard REM’s You Are the Everything way back in 1989. I remember thinking, “Wow, someone wrote this. Actually put together these words.” I think it’s one of the first times I realized that songs could be poetry and lyrics could make you want to write.

I also remember lying down in the backseat of my parents’ car at 5 am, heading out on vacation. I was going through the serious boy stuff that only a 14 year-old can go through. I had my Walkman and this song came on. I instantly felt at peace. Right with the world. Today, this song still evokes all of those feelings.
